NATIONAL RECONCILIATIONDAY 2020

Reconciliation Rap

National Reconciliation Week is held from 27th May - 3rd June each year. The 27th May marks the anniversary of the 1967 referendum, when Australia voted for the inclusion of Aboriginal and Torrestrait Islanders to be included in the census. The final day of National Reconciliation Week marks the date of the the Mabo decision, when the High Court of Australia recognised the land rights of Aboriginal and Torrestrait Islander peoples. This week is about building relationships between all Australians and learning about our shared history.

To coincide with Reconciliation Week, Edmund Rice schools in Brisbane have released their very own Reconciliation rap song.  The theme is acknowledgement of Indigenous rights in the Constitution, and was done in conjunction with local group Champion Sounds and with students from the Festival for Indigenous Edmund Rice (FIER). Local Turrbal Elder, and St Edmunds Support Officer, Uncle Joe Kirk, introduces the song  which features Indigenous students and staff from St James', St Laurence’s, St Edmund's, St Patrick's, Ignatius Park & St Brendan's.

This song is free distribution. It is not for sale. Copyright of the song remains with Champion Sounds.

We thank Ben Porter- key rapper, Joel Turner- vocals, beatbox and Mark Welge- producer.

Bridge Walk

On Thursday 23rd of May the Deception Bay Flexible Learning Centre community commemorated National Sorry Day with a bridge walk. The event began at school with a refresher on what the school community was about to advocate for – recognition of the need for reconciliation within our nation and to bridge the gap by saying Sorry. Our community travelled by buses to Decker Park Brighton, on the south side of the Ted Smout Bridge. We regrouped and began our bridge march with an Acknowledgement of Country led by Fred Leone. Proudly walking behind our “Sorry” banner we set out for the bridge’s halfway - the fishing platform. On our return to Decker Park the community joined in a celebratory BBQ and participated in indigenous games before returning to Deception Bay.
