Detention for Detention 2020Detention for Detention is a campaign that involves students taking a voluntary lunch time detention to stand in solidarity with children in immigration detention. Australia's policies on asylum seekers and refugees involve mandatory detention for all asylum seekers who arrive in Australia without a visa. This includes children. Detention for Detention is about advocating for these kids and saying "you are welcome here."
Our first detention ran in 2013, when over 1000 children were being held in offshore immigration detention. Students wore tape covering their mouths and ropes tying their hands to represent the oppression of asylum seeker children. Schools pledged to hold a yearly detention until there were no more children left in offshore detention. After a number of successful detentions, Australia has seen the number of children in offshore detention take a huge plunge. However, ERA For Change continues to advocate for better treatment of refugees and asylum seekers who are still treated unfairly by Australia's Government. |
