Brisbane Refugee welcome hub
During the July holidays a group of students and staff met up with 40 unaccompanied minors (15-17 year old refugees living in the community without their parents) had a BBQ, played soccer, and spent time getting to know each other. It was a great day, and we’ve decided to do it every week. So starting this term, every Sunday morning a groups of students and staff from our schools will head into Roma St Parklands to meet the refugees, play games, share lunch and get to know one another.
If we are going to be genuine advocates for refugees, we have to actually know refugees. This is a great way for us to do that, and to offer these young people some much needed welcome and support – helping them to settle into life in Australia. It will also be a great opportunity for us to catch up with each other more regularly and chat about different ERA For Change ideas.
