Climate on a Budget
It is vital that any climate campaign considers the variability in the school budget, and acknowledges how sustainable solutions can be achieved with little monetary significance. “Climate on a budget” is a sub-program that assists schools and our future young leaders, to promote the simple solutions in everyday life that can contribute to establishing a more sustainable, and environmentally-friendly future. So how does it work?
The “Climate on a budget” program is a goal-setting strategy that schools can adopt immediately, and expose to their respective community. It entails using the “YAY” acronym, which subtly encourages and positively applauds the efforts of sustainable action.
How does it work?
“Y” stands for you action and can be undertaken or adopted by anyone at school or home with little effort.
“A” stands for an action or long-term solution that the school community will undertake.
Community awareness is a key attribute to activism. By spreading awareness about an “action” that your school will undertake, you immediately generate a strong support base to kick-start the program. As the “YAY” acronym includes two “you” goals and one “action”, any school, at any time, can establish and use the acronym as a tool in their own community. The YAY acronym is a tool to promote ways to protect the “Climate on a budget” to students and the broader community. We encourage schools to create their version. Provide interesting facts to generate awareness and provoke conversations. Share your version of “Climate on a budget” with your school community and tag @eraforchange. Let’s generate awareness together.
One way in which the acronym can be presented is as follows:
Y = You: You can turn down your device brightness below 50%. This simple solution can power a lightbulb for over 1000 hours, if over 2000 people were to enact this over 1 hour.
A = Action: An action that our school plans to take is increasing our reliance on solar energy.
Y = You: Taking a two-minute shower one night each week can save the same amount of water required to produce 50 burgers!
